I really find it stressful calling the reception. The lady I spoke to this time had such a patronising tone. It honestly felt like she thought I was stupid for even calling.
I only called to ask if I could move my midwife appointment. The reminder text comes from the midwife centre, so I didn’t realise I was calling the hospital reception. She sounded quite annoyed about that, and also because I didn’t have my blue book next to me. She said I’m supposed to carry it everywhere with me — which was completely new information to me.
I actually recognised her voice because I’ve called before and had a similar experience. It’s just not pleasant.
I’m really glad I chose St Mary’s in Paddington, as I previously had a bad experience with a gynaecologist at Queen Charlotte’s where the attitude was also quite abrupt. Unfortunately, since the reception centre is based there, I still have to call them.
I understand people can be busy, but the tone really makes a difference. A bit more patience and kindness would go a long way.

Everything was Better than expected given the staff shortages/strains the NHS has been facing recently. Pre-birth the experience was amazing, staff super attentive and lovely (honestly left us in awe of them). …
The level of care we received before, during and after the birth of my son was just amazing! I can’t speak highly enough of the staff that helped us, in some cases it’s hard to put into words. …
I can’t say enough about the staff here, I was originally booked for the birth center, but my labor started with my water breaking, going to the labor ward for induction after 24 hours, then baby’s heart beat dropping so I had an epidural …
