Write a ReviewOur two year old daughter had a non blanching rash and was quite poorly, we took her to a&e and we can’t praise them enough for the wonderful care we received. The receptionist was lovely, the nurse was brilliant and the Dr was amazing. …
First visit yesterday, unfortunately, for minor but painful injury. Triage was about 30 mins and consultation with Doctor less than 2 hours. Impressed with (and grateful for) how clean the waiting areas and toilet facilities were.
Staff pleasant but clearly very busy.
I had to call 999 for a client who attempted suicide, the operator was on the ball and advised I do cpr, she spoke me through it all in a very soothing manner until the paramedics arrived. They arrived so quickly, thankfully and were amazing. I can’t thank them enough for their compassionate and professionalism. You are all stars.
Was using A &E for first time. Very professional, there was a wait but they had less staff than usual due to illness. In my opinion the NHS is a service we should all be grateful of, so a wait for a great service is acceptable.
I had a total hip replacement on 1st April. The nurses on Jubilee ward were outstanding, especially Sister Julie. Just want to say a big thank you for the excellent care I received from admission to being discharged. A special thank you to the Consultant Mr Temple too.
Due to the new(ish) computer system, I’ve dropped off the radar in 2 departments. Please, if you have regular appointments (i.e. annual) for a health issue, check if you’re overdue for an appointment. They might tell you that there’s …
Came here while on holiday, my son broke his leg in Ilfracombe, came here by ambulance and the paramedic Lee was fantastic. The hospital staff were really good, they X-Rayed and plastered his leg and made it as comfortable as possible for my son.
Several wards looked after our Mother in her final days at North Devon Hospital – cant thank the staff enough for their care and dedication and support they give. Special thanks to Glossop Ward for the care given in my Mothers final hours.
Late April, sustained a proximal fracture of the humerus. From all A&E staff through to x-ray and orthopaedic staff – fantastic! Can’t praise them enough.
We had to visit the hospital last Sunday I cannot express how very efficient all the staff were. Top class service. Thank you so much.
Awful hospital, been in pain since before Xmas, Blame it on anxiety and rely on bloods way too much, refuse to do further investigations. Absolute joke and things for me are only getting worse. Don’t know what they are doing.
Super little hospital with fantastic staff. Special mention to Karen in A&E who lifted the mood of all the patients in the waiting area with tea, biscuits and an infectious laugh. Thank you.
Father seen by Martin in A & E. useless . Said he probably had
Cancer and at his age nothing he could do sent him home again.
Disgusted.
To all the staff on the Jubilee Ward, thank you all for taking such great care of me, sorry if I was a tad difficult about having to leave, you guys were great!
Mum’s on Tarka ward. Staff are excellent. They are very busy but make sure they treat all with care and respect.
The only issue which isn’t the staff…. …
Shocking my partner was told to get to A&E straight away where the doctors knew he was coming due to the severity of his condition, 2.5 hours we are still waiting despite Them ringing us
I have just left Alex ward. I was in hospital with pneumonia for 10 days. The staff were amazing, so supportive and professional.
The hospital food was first class, a good choice and not once did I go hungry. …
All the staff from the receptionist to the varying nurses that I saw were absolutely delightful. Was in and out in under two hours with a boot for my fractured foot and a set of crutches. Best experience I’ve ever had at a hospital.
Refusing a duty of care to a high risk complications pregnant woman with mental health requiring her partner to be present in scans @ladywell maternity outpatients. “Maternity matron insists its not age discrimination but apparently …
I attended A/E this morning with an Achilles Tendon problem! The attention and treatment from arrival at reception to leaving the department was first class . Attentive, Smooth and prompt intervention from polite/ personable staff. Many thanks for your care / expertise.
From consultant, to all nursing and office staff the care, compassion and help that was given to my brother during his long stay was amazing and cannot thank the hospital and staff enough. If only all our hospitals could be so wonderful. Thank you a million
Just arrived home after having an operation on a umbilical hernia today.
Staff and surgical team on Lundy ward absolutely Fabulous. Can’t thank you all enough for your care and consideration during my stay …
Have been having treatment at the Seamore unit and can’t speak highly enough of every single member of the staff, always having fun to relax you whilst providing the best service they can with ultimate professional delivery. I look on the team as friends now and will miss them now treatment has ended.
Taken in via ambulance whilst on holiday, the Dr’s, nurses and paramedics were amazing. They were getting busy as the evening started, but they kept smiling and got through helping people as quickly as possible.
I’ve just spent 5 days in the NDDH. 2 nights in MAU and 3 nights in Alexander ward the staff on both wards were amazing. Doctors nurses and Admin, cleaners, perfect. Very cheerful.
I cannot fault the treatment my son received yesterday 5th June. He was taken to A&E by friends for swollen foot and stomach pains after an xray and CT scan his foot was not a problem but he landed up having an appendectomy at 8.15pm and is recovering well
Recently visited for colonoscopy. Fantastic staff very cheerful and reassuring.
Even the consultant was cheerfull and explained the procedure fully also step by step as it happened. I was even able to watch it all on the large colour tv. Great hospital, great staff.
Old hospital that serves the local area. Thankful for the assistance I’ve had each time I’ve visited the A&E. Both of my sons were born there as well and the service was superb. Thanks
5.5 hours post birth to a perfect little boy. All week the maternity team have cared for me as if I were friend after my waters broke early then labour came today. From the girls who bought the tea and biscuits to the smiles and caring …

Fantastic service from Mike Ford and the team today. Thank you for your selfless service on Christmas Day.
Credit where it’s due; to the telephonist who, last week, directed my query to the right person in the phlebotomy department, then, today, to the receptionist at the main entrance, to the needle wielding phlebotomist, working alone for much …
Disgusting service at A &E ,
Two receptionists who was so rude and uncaring.. why are they in this job ???
Even with a Dr’s referral I was told ” that’s not our problem, take it up with …
Went for 2 broken fingers on a Saturday night and I was in and out within 5 hours which is unheard of. Even with them having to cut 2 rings off.
Staff so friendly and made me feel at ease.
Very good service would have appendix removed again. The staff were very kind and comforting.
I have mixed reviews on Barnstaple hospital, I feel like most (99%) of staff are great! But that 1% if you get them can leave you feeling meh. Overall great hospital, cafe, magazines, all the staff in ICU are fabulous and are really …
I have been admitted several times to King George V ward with gallbladder problems. Everyone involved with me has been absolutely wonderful. I’ve been treated with respect by all. Unfortunately, I have quite complex problems but the …
I had to stay for two nights in September and the staff were professional, reassuring and attentive. Everyone seemed to be so busy all of the time but still managed to be happy and friendly. Even though I would have preferred to have not been in hospital, it has to rank as one of my best hospital experiences.
My son had day surgery this week, the day surgery staff and anaesthetists were absolutely brilliant, they kept my son calm and were very understanding of his young age! Jane the nurse on the ward was amazing she really helped me and my son, thank you all for everything you have done for us.
A caring hospital struggling as all hospitals with the challenges of the pandemic and staff shortages, but doing so admirably. Fantastic staff. The car parking is good and very reasonably priced. Thank you.
I work at the hospital and it is by far the best job I’ve ever had. The care I see every day is totally amazing and if I or a relative was looking for a hospital I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend NDDH. I’ve been there a year in a few days …
My heartfelt thanks to all who cared for me yesterday at MAU especially Gaby, Saxon, the lovely Helen & Dr Lusty.
But an even greater thank you goes to Dr Janus who was in A & E on the afternoon …

Disgusting – little girl falls I’ll while away . Expected at first to do a 4hour round trip to Exeter . Ended up here at A&E all about covid which I knew she didn’t have from previous test . New test Neg result – to be told temp was down to …
5 hours waiting with 2 young children. Doctor kept saying he’d be back in a moment and disappeared for half hour each time. No communication, left wondering what they were going to do. Rude nurse. Felt like a total inconvenience to them. …
Thank you to the hospital and staff in the Caroline Thorpe ward for the 5 star service that you have given our daughter during a difficult delivery and subsequent post-birth care. Becky specifically would like to express her appreciation to …
This is a prime example of the wonderful NHS working hard to provide a service in difficult times. All staff were excellent. Service good.
My son David who had learning disabilities was dreadfully let down by Alexander ward at North Devon hospital. ( in my opinion) I was there every day for 3 weeks over Christmas. We were told it was Pancreacitis. He was 38 years old & died. …
Had my gallbladder removed by Mr David Bunting and team during day surgery. They are all working so hard during this terrible time. I felt reassured about my procedure and very well looked after. We are very lucky to have NDDH.
Was admitted from A&E and just had an 8 day stay on Glossup Ward. The nurses were absolutely amazing, doing a wonderful job with a smile on their faces and nothing was too much trouble. Thank you guys, you do a great job and deserve huge pay rises for all that you do. Jane Pearce

A and e excellent service amazing Dr and staff.very friendly..clean environment
Terrible care at Barnstaple A&E. Was there for 22hours, no food, no water. Had a broken neck and was left roaming around the department for 22 hours! Redeeming feature was all the staff were polite and kind, just overwhelmed and with no leadership. Chaotic
Had an appointment with a specialist on a Sunday afternoon. The hospital staff felt in control was nice and friendly and the specialist was really good.
All staff i have encountered have been professional and helpful.
The hospital is a little dated and is the poor brother of the RDE at Exeter. Not set up for all treatments. Was under treat of closure but a growing local population means it stays
Always felt looked after when I’ve been hear nurses can’t do enough for you.
Beds comfy and it’s a very clean hospital from what I’ve seen of it.
Hospital food not great but not the worst, slightly better food in main lobby …
Another trip to A&E this morning with svt. Again, absolutely fantastic service from the moment I called 999 to discharge and this is the service I get every time. This morning I had the pleasure of being looked after by Dr. Francoise …
Excellent “service” in A&E when I, unfortunately, had to go twice with my father recently. Also had excellent service in the day care unit a few years back again whilst taking my elderly father in for a quick intervention. I have to admit …
Was a guest here (😁) from 8th to 11th June following a cycling accident whereby I fractured my Femur. What can I say. Nothing but superb. The quality of treatment I received from initial arrival at A&E, then to surgery and after care was …
On Friday 12th February I visited A+E with a broken wrist, I signed in at reception the staff on the desk were helpful and efficient, I waited 10 mins and was then seen by a nurse who assessed my wrist and assured me a doctor would see me …
The hospital stuck in the dark ages! Not allowed to let Dads stay past 8pm in this day and age where Dads can have more time off with their kids, shared parental leave etc this hospital wants to still enforce archaic rules. Get in with the modern times. Bet you still use fax machines too.
I wrote a review of my care and treatment at Ladywell unit and my stay on KG ward in September 2017 and it has NOT been put here why?. I cannot praise the staff from ALL LEVELS high enough,,,the care I received was excellent..40 years ago …
I just had a bladder check the nurses are so kind , helpful told my at ever stage .Thay are all angels hope you had a merry Christmas and a very HAPPY NEW YEAR 🎈🤶 TO U ALL XXXXXXS …
Competent hospital for bone injuries, happens to lots of cycle tourists having accidents, like me. Very caring and friendly staff.
I had the misfortune to have to go here in December 2017. The Staff are overworked. The food was more a kin to an antique take away. To cap it all off being left in my bed in a corridor for hours really made the experience as close to being …
Did not expect my vaccinated dad, who was in there with cancer to get covid. Then he was put in a ward with non covid patients which makes no sense. Then he got sent home, with covid and now my mum has it.
Went to a and e then medical assessment unit during a holiday in Devon when my heart rate suddenly increased. I’m 25 weeks pregnant. The care was wonderful and the staff are so dedicated.
Although my first attempt at the required investigation came to nothing due to bed blocking, when I was seen the staff could not have been more professional, pleasant and caring. …
Excellent staff who helped me recently – but not seen for about 6 hours by a doctor after signing in at A.and E.
Appalling Hospital,my 9 month old grandson was kept waiting 4hours in A and E before he was seen by a Doctor. As a retired Nurse I find this unacceptable.A baby should never wait that long to be seen.I will be making an official complaint …
All things considered I was well cared for, they are very busy at all times & the staff are stretched to breaking point they deserve medals
Attended outpatients at Ladywell unit.
All staff were amazing , my consultant and nurse were fantastic. Thank you
The only decent thing is the carpark some of the staff are ok but the majority could do with some serious training, trying to see a doctor when required is like trying to get blood out of a stone and TV is £10 a day (more if you want sky!) This review is for pre covid 19 so can only imagine what it’s like now
Thanks for the great help today, both Andrew the paramedic and Fi the A&E doctor kept us calm, reassured and safe. In fact everyone was helpful and kind making a traumatic day easier to cope with.
Can’t say enough about the care I received from the team when I had kidney stones in King George v ward especially funky who ran the ward nothing was to much trouble very efficient and professional well done guys and girls you all need a pay rise
Worst hospital experience I’ve had. My husband was accidentally delivered here instead of Exeter where he was a cancer patient. They were so confused by what to do with a neutropenic patient at North Devon they put him in an infectious …
Mum was in the ICU for 3 nights, all the staff were superb. Their care and attention to both Mum and the family who visited and stayed by her side at night was truly appreciated – Thank you all so very much.
